As Children’s Day Celebration is being commemorated across the country, the Executive Director of Securing the Creative Goldmine in Youths Initiative, Mr. Asibor Edwin has appealed to Federal and State Governments to as a matter of urgency initiate a policy that would establish Parenting school for would be parent with evidence of a parenting licence
Comrade Edwin who stated this at the Children’s Correctional center in Benin City where his organization, Securing the Creative Goldmine in youths Initiative organised a “Symposium on parenting and social vices perpetrated by Teenagers at the Children’s Correctional center in commemoration of ‘Children’s Day’ attributed the spate of increased social vices among under age-children to poor parenting.
According to him, reduction of social vices and the number of children at the Correctional center is achievable when Government take practical efforts to regulate parenting to ensures its effectiveness in the life of the children
He stressed that Certifying adult with parenting who intend to get married should be mandatory to ascertain their capacity to handle the emotional , psychological ,spiritual needs of their Children before giving birth or face sanctions.
“The government should enact a policy of mandatory School of Parenting that can certify them as a yardstick for giving birth to children or else face prosecution “.
“The negative impact of poor parenting on the development of Children has assumed dangerous dimension that requires holistic and urgent intervention and if possible a state of emergency to curb to address the consequences of poor parenting on the society “.
Speaking àlso, a nuero psychologist, Mrs Veronica Effoing centered on the need for smooth relationship between parents and their children .She noted that frequent communication between parents and their children would help to unveil things they would ordinarily want to keep secret.
Explaining further, she decried the dearth of good parenting which has largely contributed to the increased number of under age children at the Correctional centers for committing one social vices or the other.
Mrs. Effoing further said that social vices could be reduced to it’s barest minimum if parents would adopt the right approach to care for their Children’s well-being through caring for they Psychological, Spiritual and physical needs ànd most importantly making frantic efforts to know the type of friends they keep.
She added that free flow of communication between parents and their children would promote good relationship and open access to discuss their challenges or frustrations with their parents .
On her part, the director of citizens department of Edo State ministry of Justice, Mrs Charity Chris-Ebosele shed light on positive parenting, roles and ways to address social vices affecting teenagers in the society.
Barr (Mrs) Chris-Ebosele emphasized that poor parenting has legal implications that attracts charges on the part of parents.
“Parents should be aware that when they fails to provide for the basic needs of their Children, they are liable to neglect charges “.
“Physical, emotional and psychological abuse on Children can also lead to charges”. She said.
She however advised that would-be-parents should endeavor to acquire parenting skills before giving birth to prevent some of these social vices the country is currently experiencing.
There were goodwill messages from students of Nursing Nero-psychiatric hospital, Social Work department from university of Benin and a host of other participants encouraged the children to braced up and eschew crime in other to live a better life.
High point of the event was the display of a comic drama on poor parenting by the children and àlso quizz competition.
