The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State council has instituted an annual award on Investigative Journalism for journalists in the state.

The award, courtesy of Africa Network for the Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ) is the second annual award for investigative journalism for journalists in the state.

The Executive Director of ANEEJ, Rev’d David Ugolor at an interactive session with journalists at the NUJ Press Centre in Benin City on Thursday said he conceptualized the award to encourage a sense of investigative journalism among journalists in the state.

According to him, two journalists are to receive #200,000 as prize money for distinguishing themselves in investigative journalism.

He expressed his readiness to support the union and therefore urged the leadership of the union to work out modalities for a partnership with ANEEJ.

He also disclosed that ANEEJ would join forces with EDO NUJ to institutionalize international training for journalists in order for them to adapt to the New Information Communication Technology (NICT).

Chairman of the union, Comrade Festus Alenkhe appreciated Rev’d Ugolor for his support to the union.

He assured that the award presentation would be incorporated into the NUJ Press Week slated for the first week of December.

It would be recalled that the Edo State Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu had in 2021 instituted a similar award which is presently in its second year.

This year’s award will be presented on December 20, 2023 and three journalists are expected to take home cash as their award.
