In a pivotal move aimed at addressing the challenges faced by returnees from Libya, the Federal Government has extended its support to the Edo State Government, which recently welcomed a new group of returning citizens at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. This intervention coincides with the Edo State Government’s ongoing efforts to reintegrate these individuals into society, guided by the regional agency, Edo Migration Agency (EDMA).

The Director-General of EDMA, Hon. Chief Lucky Agazuma, received the returnees and highlighted the Federal Government’s role in facilitating their reintegration. “We are thankful for the federal collaboration that allows us to turn the tide for our returnees,” Agazuma stated, underlining the importance of providing vocational training programs funded by federal resources. These programs are designed to equip returnees with the necessary skills to promote self-reliance and discourage future attempts at irregular migration.

Agazuma urged the returnees to view their homecoming as a new beginning rather than a failure. “You are back home, safe, and with the government’s commitment—both at the state and federal levels—your recovery journey will be supported,” he explained.

The Director-General emphasized the critical nature of sharing experiences to prevent others from facing similar perilous journeys. He reassured the returnees, stating, “We do not judge you; what matters is your safety and creating opportunities for you here at home.

This Federal intervention comes at a crucial time as many returnees recounted their traumatic experiences in Libya, shedding light on the pressing need for enhanced awareness and opportunities for Edo youths. Their stories serve as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with illegal migration, reinforcing the collaborative efforts necessary to address these issues at both state and federal levels.

The Governor also applauded the Federal Government’s involvement, affirming that every citizen’s well-being is a priority. As both governments work together, they remain steadfast in their commitment to creating an environment in Edo State where youths can thrive, thereby reducing the allure of dangerous migration routes.

Through this collaborative approach, the state and federal governments aim to ensure that every returnee is provided with the support they need for successful reintegration into society, fostering a sense of safety and belonging that is crucial for the future of Edo youth.
