A man, Oghomwentiti Uwagboe Best, has been remanded in prison custody by a Chief Magistrate Court in Benin City, Edo State, over the alleged assault of a staff member of BEDC Electricity Plc while on official duty.

The suspect was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Court 2, Oredo, following an incident that reportedly occurred during an official visit by the BEDC staff to his residence.

According to sources, the BEDC official had visited the premises to carry out a legitimate assignment when the suspect allegedly became violent.

He was accused of assaulting the staff member and damaging her mobile phone in the process.
Eyewitnesses said that in an attempt to escape the attack, the BEDC official fell and sustained injuries.

She was immediately rushed to a hospital, where she received medical attention due to the severity of her condition.

The incident was reported to the police, leading to the arrest of the suspect. He was subsequently charged to court.

During proceedings, Uwagboe Best pleaded not guilty to the charges. His counsel applied for bail, which was granted by the magistrate.

However, he was unable to meet the bail conditions and was therefore remanded in custody pending the fulfillment of the terms.

The incident has sparked reactions within the community, particularly among BEDC staff, who noted that attacks on personnel during official duties are not uncommon.

Reacting to the development, the Regional Head, Benin South Region of BEDC, Mr. Henry Onovwaka, said the company is treating the matter with seriousness and may pursue civil action over the damages caused.

He added that such action would serve as a deterrent to members of the public who engage in violence against staff carrying out lawful duties.

The case has been adjourned to March 31, 2026, for further hearing.
