Nigeria’s security situation continues to deteriorate as rising cases of kidnapping, banditry, and other violent crimes heighten concerns across the country. Many observers have attributed the growing insecurity to inadequate vigilance and weak security structures at the grassroots level.

Grassroots Publishers argue that many of the security challenges confronting the nation often originate within local communities before spreading to local government areas, states, and eventually becoming national security threats. They maintain that stronger action by local government authorities and state governments could significantly reduce the burden on federal security agencies.

According to grassroots advocates, effective security management should not be left solely to the Federal

Government. Rather, state governors and local government chairmen must take greater responsibility for safeguarding their communities through proactive intelligence gathering, community-based security initiatives, and closer collaboration with traditional rulers, youth groups, and security agencies.

Security analysts note that criminal activities such as kidnapping and banditry rarely emerge overnight. In many cases, warning signs are visible within communities long before they escalate into major security crises. They argue that prompt intervention by local authorities can prevent criminal networks from taking root and expanding their operations.

The call for urgent action comes amid increasing reports of insecurity across various parts of the country, with many Nigerians expressing fears over the safety of lives and property. Citizens are urging state governments to strengthen local security structures, invest in surveillance systems, and support community-driven efforts aimed at combating crime.

Observers maintain that if local government councils and state administrations become more responsive to emerging security threats within their jurisdictions, insecurity across the country could be drastically reduced, allowing federal authorities to focus on broader national security concerns.

We are calling on all local government chairmen and state governors to wake up to the realities of the current security situation,a concerned citizen said. The time for decisive action is now. Security begins at the grassroots, and every level of government must play its part.

As the nation searches for lasting solutions to its security challenges, many believe that a renewed commitment by governors and local government leaders could be a critical step toward restoring peace, stability, and public confidence across Nigeria.
