A Political Affairs Analyst, Comrade Ibhagbosoria Andrew has called on Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, to exercise caution in managing the influx of former political opponents into his administration, warning against what he described as the emergence of “Trojan horses” seeking personal gain rather than genuine partnership.
He stated this while addressing journalists in Benin City yesterday.
According to Comrade Ibhagbosoria , Governor Okpebholo’s political rise remains one of the most remarkable success stories in Edo State’s recent history.
“Once dismissed by critics as a political newcomer during the 2023 senatorial election, he defied expectations by defeating established political figures and eventually securing the governorship ticket against formidable contenders.
He also noted that throughout his political journey, Okpebholo has faced intense criticism, ridicule, from political adversaries who doubted his capacity and questioned his legitimacy.
“Despite these challenges, , he consistently emerged victorious, both at the polls and in the courts.”
Describing his emergence as a “divine mandate,” the group likened his political trajectory to the biblical story of David overcoming Goliath, emphasizing that his humility, grassroots appeal, and commitment to human development endeared him to the people.
The statement further recalled that after his governorship victory, opponents continued to allege electoral irregularities and predicted that the courts would overturn his mandate. However, the governor successfully defended his victory through all levels of judicial scrutiny.
Comrade Ibhagbosoria further referenced the recent Edo Central Senatorial by-election, where political critics reportedly attempted to diminish Okpebholo’s influence by attributing his previous electoral success to external support.
According to the group, the outcome of the by-election further demonstrated the governor’s strong political base and widespread acceptance among the electorate.
While acknowledging the governor’s commitment to inclusiveness and unity, particularly among the Esan people, he also expressed concern over the recent wave of defections from opposition ranks into the ruling party.
He alleged that many of the new entrants were among those who had previously attacked the governor’s character and opposed his political aspirations, adding that their sudden support may be motivated more by personal interests than genuine belief in his developmental agenda.
“Many of these politicians are already lobbying for contracts and appointments,” the statement claimed, warning that some may be seeking opportunities for personal advancement rather than contributing meaningfully to the state’s development.
Comrade Ibhagbosoria advised the Governor not to neglect long-standing members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who remained loyal during challenging periods of his political journey.
He further cautioned that emerging factions and political cliques within the governor’s support base could pose future challenges if not carefully managed.
“Integration should not translate into displacement, urging the governor to balance reconciliation efforts with recognition of those who stood by him before and during his rise to power.
The statement concluded by encouraging Governor Okpebholo to rely on wisdom, discernment, and political foresight as he continues to build a united front for the progress of Edo State.
“Governor Okpebholo’s Shine Agenda has continued to resonate with the people. As he works to strengthen unity and development across the state, he must remain vigilant, distinguish genuine allies from opportunists, and ensure that loyalty and commitment are duly rewarded,” he added.
