The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, joins journalists worldwide in commemorating World Press Freedom Day 2026, themed “Defending Media Freedom as a Cornerstone of Democracy and Human Rights.”
Today, we celebrate the resilience, courage, and dedication of journalists in Edo State and across Nigeria who, despite intimidation, economic challenges, and evolving digital threats, continue to uphold truth, promote accountability, and protect the public’s right to know.
Our Position
1. Journalism is Not a Crime
We strongly condemn the harassment, arbitrary arrests, and cyberbullying of journalists in the course of their duties. A free press remains fundamental to the growth and sustainability of democracy in Edo State and Nigeria at large.
“We call on the Edo State Government, security agencies, and all stakeholders to ensure the protection of journalists, especially those covering elections, protests, and investigative reports. Impunity for attacks on media professionals must end.
“We urge Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) in Edo State to comply fully with the Freedom of Information Act by granting journalists timely and unhindered access to public records. Transparency is key to combating misinformation.
. Welfare and Ethical Journalism
“We appeal to media proprietors to prioritize fair remuneration, insurance coverage, and improved working conditions for journalists. In return, we charge our members to uphold professionalism, accuracy, and integrity, and to reject misinformation and inducement-driven journalism.
“We commend the Edo State Government for its continued engagement with the media and encourage deeper collaboration through regular press briefings, capacity-building initiatives, and support for community broadcasting platforms.
We also appreciate the people of Edo State who continue to stand for press freedom by consuming information responsibly and speaking out against attacks on journalists.
“As we mark this important day, the NUJ Edo State Council reaffirms its unwavering commitment to a free, independent, and responsible press. Democracy thrives when the press is free—when journalists are silenced, society is left in darkness.”
