The Chief Executive Officer of the Elite Athletes Development and Podium Performance Board of the National Sports Commission, Olympian Yussuf Alli, has congratulated Edo Queens Football Club on their remarkable triumph in the 2026 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Super Six.

Edo Queens were crowned champions after playing out a goalless draw against defending champions Bayelsa Queens in the final Super Six fixture in Port Harcourt on Sunday, finishing the tournament with 10 points from five matches.

The Benin-based side secured three victories, one draw, and suffered one defeat to emerge champions ahead of Bayelsa Queens and other participating teams.

After losing their opening match 1-0 to Nasarawa Amazons, Edo Queens bounced back strongly with a dominant 4-1 victory over FC Robo Queens, a 6-2 win against Abia Angels, and a crucial 2-1 victory over hosts Rivers Angels before sealing the title.

The victory marks Edo Queens’ second NWFL Premiership title, following their historic first league triumph in 2024.

In a congratulatory message, Alli, a former Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, praised the players, coaching crew, and management of Edo Queens for their resilience, commitment, and dedication in bringing honour to the state.

He also congratulated his successor, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, the current Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, commending his courage and efforts towards advancing sports development in Edo State.

Alli said the achievement reflects the quality of work put into the club and the strong foundation built over time.

“This remarkable achievement is a reflection of the club’s dominance and the incredible work done by the players, technical crew, and management.

“As the former chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission who had the honour of leading Edo Queens to winning the NWFL trophy for the first time in the club’s history two years ago, I take immense pride seeing the team and new management build on that foundation and take the club to greater heights,” Alli said.

He applauded Enabulele’s leadership and commitment to women’s football, noting that his contributions to sports development in Edo State were worthy of commendation.

“My dear brother, I believe this is just the beginning of success in your administration because it is clear you are on the path of progress. As you have written your name in gold through service and commitment to sports development in Edo, I urge you to remain focused and I assure you of my support anytime, any day,” Alli added.

The Olympic medalist urged Edo Queens to remain focused as they prepare for the CAF Women’s Champions League, charging the team to carry the pride of Edo State and Nigeria to the continental stage.

“Your next task awaits on the continental stage. I urge you to approach the CAF Women’s Champions League with the same courage and determination. Fly the flag of Edo State and Nigeria high. Africa is watching, and I have confidence in your ability to deliver and make us proud,” he stated.

Alli further charged the Edo State Sports Commission and Edo Queens to continue preserving the state’s rich sporting legacy through dedication, excellence, and sustainable development.
