The Senator representing Edo Central Senatorial District, Joseph Ikpea, has called for peace, unity, and patriotism as Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day and celebrates 27 years of uninterrupted civilian rule.
In a statement made available to journalists in Benin City, Senator Ikpea urged Nigerians to support and collaborate with the Federal Government and various state governments in their efforts to address insecurity across the country.
The senator also appealed to residents of Edo Central to take security seriously and complement the efforts of government and security agencies by remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activities within their communities.
Reflecting on the significance of June 12, Ikpea paid tribute to the late MKO Abiola, whose victory in the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election remains a symbol of Nigeria’s democratic struggle.
He also honoured the memory of Kudirat Abiola and other heroes who sacrificed their lives or suffered permanent injuries in the fight for democratic governance.
Speaking on the 2027 general elections,
Senator Ikpea stressed the need to consolidate on the people-oriented policies and developmental initiatives of Monday Okpebholo, who previously represented Edo Central Senatorial District in the Senate before becoming governor.
According to him:
“Today is a day that we cannot joke with in the democratic history of Nigeria. We must work together to sustain the democracy that people like Chief MKO Abiola, his late wife, Kudirat, and several other people died for. Several others were incapacitated for life.
“Nigeria is going through trying times in the area of security, but it is obvious that the Federal Government and the state government under the leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo are doing so much to check insecurity. These efforts should be supported by all of us.”
The senator further urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in promoting peace, unity, and national cohesion, noting that democracy can only thrive in an atmosphere of collective responsibility and patriotism.
