The Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has marked the 2026 World Menstrual Hygiene Day with a special outreach programme aimed at promoting menstrual health and empowering teenage girls at Benin Technical College, Benin City.

Led by its Chairperson, Comrade Habiba Sam, members of the Edo NAWOJ Executive Council visited the school to distribute free sanitary pads and educate students on proper menstrual hygiene practices.

The initiative, according to the association, aligns with NAWOJ’s commitment to supporting the girl-child, amplifying the voices of women, and protecting vulnerable groups in society.

Addressing the students during the interactive session, Comrade Sam emphasized the importance of menstrual hygiene and encouraged the girls to embrace menstruation as a natural part of womanhood without shame or stigma.
“Do not feel less of yourself when you are menstruating,” she said.

“Menstruation is a normal and healthy part of growing up. What is important is maintaining good hygiene by bathing regularly, changing your sanitary pad every four to six hours, and wearing clean underwear. These practices help prevent infections and ensure your comfort.”

She further urged the students to prioritize their health and well-being during their menstrual cycle, stressing that menstruation should never hinder their education, confidence, or aspirations.

The students expressed appreciation for the gesture, describing it as both timely and impactful. Speaking on behalf of her colleagues, Miss Favor Oghara thanked NAWOJ for the sanitary pads and the valuable health education provided.

She noted that the session helped dispel common misconceptions about menstruation and reinforced the need for proper hygiene and self-confidence during menstrual periods.

The outreach concluded with the distribution of sanitary pads to the students, as NAWOJ reaffirmed its dedication to promoting the health, dignity, and empowerment of girls and women across Edo State.

World Menstrual Hygiene Day is observed annually on May 28 to raise awareness about the importance of good menstrual health and hygiene, while advocating for access to menstrual products and education for girls and women worldwide.
