The Senator representing Edo South Senatorial District, Neda Imasuen, has unveiled plans to reconstruct the dilapidated Faculty of Arts Lecture Theatre at the University of Benin (UNIBEN), while also rolling out a major youth empowerment initiative to train 350 young people in boundary security.
Imasuen, who chairs the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, made the announcement during the 50th anniversary celebration of UNIBEN’s Faculty of Arts.
The Dean of the Faculty, Professor Osarhieme Benson Osadolor, had lamented the deteriorating state of the lecture theatre and the hardship faced by students. In response, Imasuen, represented at the event by former Edo State Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Orobosa Omo-Ojo, pledged to fund the theatre’s reconstruction as part of his constituency projects.
The lawmaker also assured the academic community that the National Assembly remains committed to boosting university funding, protecting academic freedom, and bridging the gap between research and industry.
“Our country needs more than degrees, it needs problem solvers, ethical leaders, and courageous citizens,” Imasuen said. “Education is not just about acquiring certificates; it is about building resilience, character, and responsibility.”
Reeling out his track record in education, the Senator disclosed that he has awarded more than 420 scholarships in the past two years, including two students of UNIBEN’s Music and Educational Management departments. His office has also paid Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) fees for over 500 candidates, while introducing vocational programmes to equip parents with skills in modern farming, fashion design, and traditional event services.
In addition, Imasuen threw his weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s Students Loan Act, describing it as a “vital step towards widening access to higher education.”
Away from the classroom, the Senator announced that his office will soon commence the training of 350 youths in boundary security, part of broader efforts to empower young people with employable skills and strengthen local safety.
